A GREENWICH VILLAGE STAPLE
In the '80s, when downtown NYC was gritty, wild and full of opportunities, Japanese expats Takashi Sando and Mamoru Tsunoda met while working at a sushi restaurant on Waverly Place. Both Takashi and Mamoru had worked at restaurants back home in Osaka, and were excited to introduce Japanese food to an American audience.
With a third partner, Kenji Tomita, they opened Marumi on LaGuardia Place in 1991, in the heart of the NYU campus. Serving delicious, affordable, home-style Japanese food, Marumi quickly became a local fixture with a loyal clientele. Over the last 20-plus years, Marumi's owners have watched their customer's kids (as well as their own) grow up and move away; even as the neighborhood changes and evolves, Marumi remains a Village favorite.
These days, Japanese food is so common that sushi rolls are available at the corner bodega, so Takashi and Mamoru decided it was time to shake things up at the restaurant. After extensive renovations, Marumi relaunched in the fall of 2014 with a revamped menu. With an emphasis on fresh ingredients and traditional recipes, new additions to the menu include a large selection of udon, soba soups, and seasonal specials.
Marumi is pleased to offer authentic, creative Japanese dishes at a reasonable price. We look forward to many more years of serving the downtown community.
