In the '80s, when downtown NYC was gritty and wild and full of opportunities, Japanese expats Takashi Sando and Mamoru Tsunoda met while working at a sushi restaurant on Waverly Place. Both Takashi and Mamoru had worked at restaurants back home in Osaka, and were excited to introduce Japanese food to an American audience.
With a third partner, Kenji Tomita, they opened Marumi on LaGuardia Place in 1991, in the heart of the NYU campus. Serving delicious, affordable, home-style Japanese food, Marumi quickly became a local fixture with a loyal clientele. Over the last 20-plus years, Marumi's owners have watched their customer's kids (as well as their own) grow up and move away; even as the neighborhood changes and evolves, Marumi remains a Village favorite.
These days, Japanese food is so common that sushi rolls are available at the corner bodega-so Takashi and Mamoru decided it was time to shake things up at the restaurant. After extensive renovations, Marumi relaunched in the fall of 2014 with a revamped menu. With an emphasis on fresh ingredients and traditional recipes, new additions to the menu include a large selection of udon and soba soups and seasonal specials.
Marumi is pleased to offer authentic, creative Japanese dishes at a reasonable price. We look forward to many more years of serving the downtown community.
